Overhaul Appeal for RMB 1845

RMB for appeal.jpg

The RMB (Restaurant Miniature Buffet) is a vital part of our fleet at Chinnor, being the centrepiece of our on-train catering operation. Many passengers enjoy our cream teas each summer, while the 2010 timetable will see the introduction of new dining events.

Like most Mark 1 coaches, 1845 is now more than 50 years old and the need for a full scale overhaul has become urgent. Throughout the year our own staff carry out the necessary maintenance and running repairs, but we do not yet have the on-site facilities for the major work now required.

While the need for body repairs and a repaint can be all too readily seen, there is also important structural and mechanical work requiring specialist attention. The vehicle ends require rebuilding, while substantial sections of the floor need renewal. While this is happening the door frames will be replaced, along with other life expired components. A variety of other tasks, identified when the vehicle was inspected, will also be undertaken including full overhauls of the bogies and vacuum brake mechanism. 1845 is scheduled to return from Cranmore next April and will then resume its place within our running fleet.

A contract has been placed with Cranmore Train Services for the above work to be completed, at a cost in the region of £40,000. This is a substantial sum for the Association to find and will place a major strain on its finances but, given the special importance of 1845 to the running of the railway, the work on it has to be done. As a result, the Association is appealing to members to contribute towards the cost.

Included with this edition of The Watlington Flyer is an appeal leaflet with which you can make a donation. Please send whatever you can towards meeting the cost of this work.

Thank you in advance for any support you can give.
